Training in the Sun: Naples Army Air Field 1943—1945

Time: 2:00 pm til 3:00 pm

Location: Collier County Museum, Naples

Description: In 1943 the United States Army opened Naples Army Air Field (NAAF) to provide primary flight training for pilots. In addition, NAAF also was an auxiliary base for Buckingham Army Air Field (10 miles north of Fort Myers). Pilots and planes from NAAF provided valuable assistance for flexible gunnery students training out of Buckingham Field.

After the war the United States government sold the facility to the city of Naples and Collier County through the War Assets Administration. Today Naples Municipal Airport continues to play a vital role in the economy of Collier County. Program by author and historian Erik Carlson. Program will begin at 2 p.m. Free admission. Reservations suggested. For more information, please call (239) 252-8738.
