The Labor Day Hurricane of 1935

Time: 10:00 am til 11:00 am

Location: Charlotte County Historical Center, Punta Gorda

Description: The Charlotte County Historical Center presents:
This year marks the 8-th anniversary of this devastating hurricane which made landfall in FL in 1935. This compact and intense hurricane caused extreme damage in the upper FL Keys, with a storm surge of appx 18-20 feet and killing more than 400 people. Of those 400 nearly 200 were WWI vets housed in work camps in the area. Significant portions of the Key West Extension of the FL East Coast Railway were severely damaged or destroyed, putting an end to Henry Flagler's dream of reaching Key West by rail.
