Description: The Court of the Pile Dwellers: The Pepper-Hearst Expedition and the New Americanist Archaeology
In the spring of 1895, archaeologist Frank Hamilton Cushing hired two men and a little fishing sloop to make a reconnaissance of some curious precolumbian findings brought to the attention of the University of Pennsylvania. Cushing's remarkable discoveries and astonishing conclusions made about the ancient people of southwest Florida rocked the new field of Americanist Archaeology. This talk will highlight Cushing's work and why it marked a significant change in the way archaeologists and historians looked at Native Americans. Presentation by Melissa Timo, Florida Public Archaeology Network (FPAN)– SW Region. Program begins at 2 p.m. Free admission.Reservations required. For more information, please call (239) 252-8738.
