FPAN spotlight on WGCU's Gulf Coast Live!

Description: Are cemeteries spooky? I suppose on Halloween, they might be. But the rest of the year, they are places of contemplation and celebration of the lives of those who have gone before us. Historic cemeteries in Southwest Florida are important reminders of the hopes and dreams of the people who helped shape the area as well as key components to the heritage of cultures everywhere. The exploration of historic cemeteries by the Florida Public Archaeology Network (FPAN) through the use of ground -penetrating radar is a way to engage the public and protect the local heritage.

The director of FPAN’s Southwest Florida regional office, Annette Snapp, will discuss an upcoming ground-penetrating radar (GPR) investigation of an historic cemetery located at Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Center scheduled for November 15th. This follows an event in July where one local resident, Chris Durfey, operated GPR equipment at her family cemetery in search of unmarked graves. Chris will be present to share her thoughts on participating in this type of event.
