Hidden History of the Dry Tortugas: Writings on the Walls

Description: Fort Jefferson is one of the most extensive and ambitious permanent coastal fortifications ever constructed by the United States Army during the 19th Century and many details of its construction and military history are well documented. Many other aspects of the history of this place are still being researched and documented, including the diverse human experiences that span centuries. This incredible structure in the Gulf of Mexico has attracted different groups of people throughout time as varied as the color of the bricks. The purpose of these visitors range from military duty, to human migration, to day tripping pleasure seekers. Throughout time many inscriptions have been left behind marking these arrivals. This presentation highlights a project that focused on several inscriptions spanning the first few decades of the 20th Century to modern times.

The Civil Rights Movement in Florida by Dr. Anthony Dixon

Description: Florida has a relationship with African descendants unlike any other state. This relationship has had a direct impact on the growth of Florida. Throughout each period of Florida History there is a significant presence of the African Diaspora. Professor Dixon discusses this relationship and the Civil Rights Movement in Florida.
Dr. Anthony Dixon is the Founder and President of Archival and Historical Research Associates, LLC (AHRA), a public history company. He is also the Archivist and Assistant Professor of History at Bethune-Cookman University and Chairman of the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission (the only national heritage area under the Department of Interior/ National Parks Service in the United States). As a public historian his mission is to help “bridge the gap between academia and the public” while also preparing the next generation of historic preservationists.
