Corn Controversy: Archaeology at Fort Center

Description: This talk is geared towards adults and talks about Fort Center, an archaeological site, near Fisheating Creek, has been the center of some intense controversy in the field of archaeology. Corn (or maize) is usually seen as necessary to have complex societies, but research at Fort Center is questioning this assumption. Learn about the latest research at the site of Fort Center and why this site is making archaeologists re-think their understanding of the area and the people who used to live there.

Time: 2:00 pm til 3:00 pm

Location: Fisheating Creek

Description: This activity introduces students to prehistoric culture, focusing on ways that local prehistoric people used fire to meet their daily needs. A hands-on experiment provides a bang as students use balloons (and water balloons!) to explore how prehistoric people could cook prior to the advent of pottery.
