On Hemingway: Three Views. Presented by Betty Jean Stienshouser

Description: This Chautauqua program examines the author of machismo, from a woman’s point of view. Gertrude Stein, Act One, shares memories of a young and “impossibly handsome” reporter who came to her door in Paris – one of the “Lost Generation” of Americans created by World War 1. Willa Cather, Act Two, places Hemingway in company with other writers such as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ford Madox Ford, and Gertrude Stein. And finally, in Act Three, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings talks about “Hem,” her friend and colleague at Scribner’s. She knows, better than any, his deep affection for Florida and his fatal flaws.
Jean Betty Jean Steinshouer has been doing public programs and teacher seminars for the Florida Humanities Council since 1989 and has toured 43 other states for the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Big Read program of the National Endowment for the Arts. She is a Fellow in the Florida Studies program at the University of South Florida and portrays Marjory Stoneman Douglas in the “Dreamers and Schemers” trio that includes Henry Flagler and Gov. Napoleon Bonaparte Broward.
