On January 10, 1861, Florida seceded from the United States and a month later became one of the original states of the Confederacy. Cannon fire over Ft. Sumter, just 60 days later, marked the commencement of the most violent, traumatic, and profound struggle in American history.

Dr. John Stauffer, Chair of the History of American Civilization program at Harvard University, is a expert on the 19th Century American South. His books include: The State of Jones: The Small Southern County that Seceded from the Confederacy; Giants: The Parallel Lives of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln and The Black Hearts of Men: Radical Abolitionists and the Transformation of Race.
