Cooper Memorial Library Field Trip: History Museum and Planetarium

Time: 7:30 am til 5:00 pm

Description: If you have your sights on Florida’s environment as well as the stars, join The Friends of Cooper Memorial Library as they explore both of these wonders on their trip to The University of Gainesville’s Florida Museum of Natural History (FLMNH) and Sante Fe College’s Kika Silva Pla Planetarium.

The day begins with a self-guided tour of the FLMNH where you will have access to all of the exhibits. At the end of the tour, we will board the bus on our way to lunch at The Pomodora Café. After lunch we will take a personally guided tour of the Kika Silva Pla Planetarium led by James Albury, co-host of the PBS TV show “Star Gazers.”

The bus will leave the Cooper Library parking lot, 2525 Oakley Seaver Dr., Clermont, on Thursday, October 27, at 7:30 AM sharp returning to the library around 5:00 PM. The cost of the trip is $60 which includes round trip motor coach transportation and admission fees to both the Museum and Planetarium. Lunch and a gratuity for the bus driver are not included in the ticket price.

Coffee & Conversation: Mike Petellat and "The Spirit of Crystal River

Description: The Citrus County Historical Society is pleased to announce the Coffee and Conversation Speakers Series at the Old Courthouse Museum featuring Michael Petellat. Please join us for a book signing and learn the process of how he wrote and published his book "The Spirit of Crystal River".

The book begins on April 19, 1861, when President Lincoln proclaimed a blockade of Southern states that had seceded from the Union. The stage was set for men to use stealth to get wares to Cuba and supplies to the sons of the South. Down in Crystal River, Florida, people were doing all they could to stay alive, and the businessmen to do all they could to make money.

2 businessmen needed to transport goods by ship, and Captain Jim Blackworth was called. He had a new scow called The Spirit, and he knew his way around the dangerous Florida coast. He claimed that, at night, no one would know where he was; the Indians called it the "art of invisibility." Soon, the captain and his crew set out on the dangerous adventures of the high sea while the Civil War raged back home.
