Marquis de Lafayette and l’Hermione played a major role in the birth of the United States: at age of 20, at his own expense, he joined the American Insurgents. Lafayette was given the rank of Major General by George Washington. In 1779, Lafayette re-turned to France and persuaded King Louis XVI to send an expeditionary corps to the United States. During his second trip to America, on board the Frigate l’Hermione in 1780, Lafayette was recognized for his active participation in the victory of the Battle of Yorktown.
