Clewiston Museum presents: Navigating the Big Water

Time: 7:00 pm til 8:00 pm

Location: Clewiston Museum, Clewiston, FL

Description: FPAN's Sarah Nohe will be presenting "Navigating the Big Water: The Maritime Archaeology of the Caloosahatchee and Okeechobee Regions"

Pictures of historic steamboats usually contours up thoughts about the mighty Mississippi River or Samuel Clemens’s (Mark Twain) book, Adventures of Tom Sawyer. It may come as a surprise, but steamboats also played a very important role in the early development of Florida. The transportation of goods and people on the frontier peninsula oft times occurred on rivers and lakes. This lecture examines the historic and prehistoric use and manipulation of the Caloosahatchee River and Lake Okeechobee by humans. It also highlights the craft used for travel and fishing over time.
