SS Copenhagen

Description: Sara Ayers-Rigsby, the Southeast/Southwest Region Director for the Florida Public Archaeology Network, will deliver a history presentation about SS Copenhagen at 3PM on Friday, July 29 in Jarvis Hall, 4505 N. Ocean Drive, Lauderdale-By-The-Sea. The seminar is free and open to the public. rnrnA 19th Century British steamship, Copenhagen wrecked off present-day Lauderdale-By-The-Sea in May 1900 as it carried 5,000 tons of coal from Philadelphia to Havana. The mishap was the result of human error. The ship\'s captain, trying to avoid the powerful northward moving Gulf Stream, steered the vessel too close to shore and struck a coral reef in 25 feet of water. Efforts to free the ship were abandoned after several weeks when salvage crews were called away to a maritime disaster in New Jersey.
