Zoom into Archaeology: A Rogue's Paradise

Time: 3:30 pm til 4:30 pm

Location: Online; Central Time

Description: Join us for the next installment of FPAN's "Zoom into Archaeology" series: "A Rogue's Paradise: Archaeology of Florida's Taverns" by FPAN Museum Manager Mike Thomin and Public Archaeologist Nicole Grinnan!

For much of its early colonial history, Florida was very much on the frontier of civilization. Taverns were a mainstay of life during this time, providing a place for meeting and carousing. This presentation will explore what we can learn from the study of former tavern sites in Florida through historical and archaeological investigation. One of the biggest takeaways: though hundreds of years might separate us, people throughout history have always been up for a good time!

This presentation is most appropriate for teens and adults, but is family-friendly.

"Zoom into Archaeology" is a free online series that features a short presentation by a researcher via Zoom and an opportunity for participants to ask questions at the end of the presentation. Space is limited, however, and a password will be required for access. RSVP at the link below!

Virtual Heritage Awareness Diving Seminar

Time: 5:00 pm til 7:00 pm

Location: Online; Central Time

Description: The Heritage Awareness Diving Seminar is intended to explain the advantages of conserving shipwrecks and other submerged cultural resources, not only to preserve information about our collective past, but also to preserve the vibrant ecosystems that grow around historic shipwrecks. HADS focuses on providing scuba training agency Course Directors, Instructor Trainers, and Instructors with a greater knowledge of how to proactively protect shipwrecks, artificial reefs, and other underwater cultural sites as part of the marine environment. Upon completion of HADS, participants can teach the new Heritage Awareness Diving Specialty Course, approved by PADI, NAUI, and SDI, as well as incorporate underwater historic preservation into other courses. HADS is taught in partnership with the Florida Bureau of Archaeological Research and the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.

The cost for this program is $100; registration is available at the link above or FPAN.us/HADS. E-mail ngrinnan@uwf.edu for more information or questions.
