Zoom into Archaeology: The Arch. of a Civil War Naval Battlefield

Time: 3:30 pm til 4:30 pm

Location: Online; Central Time

Description: Join us for the next installment of FPAN's "Zoom into Archaeology" series with SEARCH, Inc. Maritime Principal Investigator Kyle Lent!

Over a period of approximately two weeks, Confederate forces stationed near Mandarin Point, FL, were responsible for targeted naval warfare operations that resulted in the sinking of two Federal vessels and the near-misses of at least two more. The torpedo (underwater mine) engagement site would sink transport vessels SS Maple Leaf and SS General Hunter, and would become one of the more successful of a new tactic of modern warfare that combined new technology and weaponry during the American Civil War. SS Maple Leaf has been the subject of numerous previous archaeological investigations in the early 1980s and 1990s. A recent marine remote sensing survey conducted off Mandarin Point confirmed the location of SS Maple Leaf.

This presentation is most appropriate for teens and adults, but is family-friendly.
