Description: Join us live on our Twitch channel for another episode of Archaeology Arcade! We are once again playing the pirate adventure game "Sea of Thieves," but this time we will be joined by Senior Archaeologist and Co-Diving Safety Officer Melissa Price!

We will talk to Melissa about all the amazing work she has done with underwater archaeology and any recent projects the state of Florida has been up to. And of course we will love to get her opinion of this game as well!

Melissa R. Price is a Senior Archaeologist with the Florida Bureau of Archaeological Research (FBAR). She received her master’s degree in Maritime Studies from East Carolina University in 2015 and joined FBAR’s underwater archaeology team in September 2016. Her master’s research involved examining the effects of treasure hunter activity on historic shipwrecks located on Florida’s east coast and comparing archaeological investigations of shipwrecks to those conducted by treasure hunters. Her current research involves the study of Middle Archaic Period mortuary ponds in Florida and the potential for submerged prehistoric sites to exist in an offshore context.

By Land and Sea: Don Tristán de Luna's 1559 Colonization Attempt

Description: Join us for a talk hosted by FPAN's Northeast and East Central Regions featuring guest speaker Nicole Grinnan of FPAN's Northwest! She will be presenting her talk entitled "By Land and Sea: Don Tristán de Luna’s 1559 Colonization Attempt in Pensacola, FL."

Before the English settled Jamestown and before the Spanish colonized St. Augustine, the harbor of Pensacola, Florida, was targeted by Spanish authorities as the perfect place to establish a town on the northern Gulf Coast. Only a few weeks after arrival, however, Tristán de Luna’s fleet and settlement were irreparably damaged by a violent hurricane. In recent years, three of Luna’s ships have been discovered in Pensacola Bay and the settlement site was discovered on a nearby landform. Join us for an exploration of the history of this ill-fated settlement attempt, as well as the exciting archaeology taking place on land and underwater!
