Description: Join us for the next installment of FPAN\'s \"Zoom into Archaeology\" series: \"Standing for Sacred Spaces: African American Cemeteries and Community Engagement\" by former FPAN Graduate Assistant and State of North Carolina Historic Cemetery Specialist Melissa Timo!rnrnTraditionally, African American cemeteries are important sites for understanding community, belief structures, material culture, land use, and even resistance efforts. Unfortunately, they often remain understudied, under reported, and subject to neglect, vandalism, and destruction. Recent movements standing up for these sacred spaces give hope for change. In this talk, you\'ll learn about some cultural features that are unique to traditionally African American cemeteries. You\'ll also see examples of community-driven engagement and other efforts to highlight the history and significance of these amazing places.rnrn--rnrn\"Zoom into Archaeology\" is a free online series that features a short presentation by an archaeologist via Zoom and an opportunity for participants to ask questions at the end of the presentation.
