Archaeology Lab Volunteer Day
Time: 10:00 am til 4:00 pm
Location: FPAN Coordinating Center, 207 East Main Street, Pensacola, FL 32502
Description: The FPAN Archaeology Lab is open to volunteers throughout the year. Volunteers help rough sort artifacts recovered from local archaeological sites. No experience is needed, but all volunteers are given a brief orientation by a professional archaeologist on their first day!

"Riverine Defenses of the Confederacy" Presentation

Description: The Historical Society of Bay County will present a program by guest speaker Nicole Grinnan, M.A., of the Florida Public Archaeology Network, titled "Obstructing the Mighty Apalachicola: Riverine Defenses of the Confederacy."
Through their work in some of the most remote parts of the Florida's “Mighty" Apalachicola River, Nicole and the Florida Public Archaeology Network recently sought to relocate large riverine obstructions embedded during the Civil War. The Confederacy reputedly placed these formidable obstructions across the expanse of the river in hopes of defending valuable resources and manufacturing operations in Georgia. For the South, the success of large construction projects like these could mean the difference between victory or defeat. Investigations of these obstructions have helped archaeologists and historians discover the many ways in which warfare both utilizes and shapes landscapes, including the landscape of one of the most formidable rivers in Florida. Join us in discovering a new aspect of Civil War history and what remains behind!
The society's program is free and open to the public.
