Description: Next Tuesday at 7pm PAST will hold their monthly meeting at the Governor Martin House. Please join us for an exciting presentation given by two FSU students on their experiemental archaeology project. FSU Students Haley Messer and Krissy Hogeweg started the Eto Perro Dugout Canoe Project in June of 2014 in order to determine the methods and time that would have been required to build a dugout canoe in both historic and prehistoric Florida. Until Spanish contact in the early 1500s, dugout canoes were made using only fire, stone, and shell. Post-contact canoes were constructed with iron tools like adzes and hatchets. Some historic period canoes implemented fire with iron, but others did not. In making the canoe, prehistoric and historic methods were used. Haley and Krissy completed the dugout canoe with the help of many volunteers in February of 2015 and it was determined that approximately 850 hours of work went into the project over the course of the nine months. On February 21st, Haley and Krissy launched the canoe at Maclay gardens here in Tallahassee, Florida. The launch was a huge success and the canoe sailed even better than expected.
