PAST monthly meeting

Time: 7:00 pm til 8:00 pm

Location: The Florida Bureau of Archaeological Research/Governor Martin House 1001 Desoto Park Drive

Description: "Prehistoric Peoples on the Redneck Riviera: Rediscovering the Woodland Cultures of Coastal Northwest Florida"

NPS archaeologist Jeffrey Shanks will give a presentation on the work that the Southeast Archeological Center has undertaken at Tyndall Air Force Base over the past eight years in investigating the Woodland occupation in the area. Using a combination of archeological survey and excavation, archival research, LiDAR imagery, systematic probing, and even cadaver dogs, SEAC has been able to relocate lost burial mounds first recorded by C. B. Moore, as well as identify several previously unrecorded village sites, shedding new light on the lifeways and ceremonial activities of the Swift Creek and Weeden Island peoples that occupied the area over a thousand years ago.

Jeffrey Shanks is an archeologist with the National Park Service at the Southeast Archeological Center. He specializes in the archeology of the prehistoric Southeast and in particular the Woodland period in Florida.
