Panhandle Archaeological Society at Tallahassee (PAST) meeting

Time: 7:00 pm til 8:00 pm

Location: B. Calvin Jones Center for Archaeology at the Governor Martin House (1001 DeSoto Park Dr)

Description: Dr. Ryan Wheeler will present, “The Miami Circle: An Odyssey of Historic Preservation and Archaeology”. Discovered in 1998, the Miami Circle is a unique 38 foot in diameter feature of holes carved in limestone made by the Tequesta Indians, and perhaps earlier cultures, as part of a large structure, possibly a council house. The discovery of this site brought considerable media attention to the Brickell Point area and resulted in much discussion in both the popular media and historic preservation community about the need to preserve significant sites threatened by development. The site is preserved due to the cooperative efforts of federal and state agencies, as well as private entities. Please join us and learn more about the Miami Circle and the processes that took place to preserve it

Dr. Ryan Wheeler is State Archaeologist and Chief, Bureau of Archaeological Research. He played a significant role in the study and protection of the site and was recently honored by the Florida Anthropological Society for his work on the Miami Circle.
