Lecture: Hometown Teams: Florida Sports History

Description: Sports offer a window into Florida’s social and political life and provide a source of pride for localities large and small throughout the state. Dr. Noll’s presentation examines the history of sport in Florida and places it in the foreground of racial and gender issues in the state. It also examines the rise of sports as big business, and how millions of Floridians tie their identity to their local team. Dr. Noll doesn’t forget about the fun aspects of Florida sports- from participation to spectators— from Super Bowl to pickleball.rnrnSteve Noll is a Master Lecturer at UF, historian, and author. He received his Ph.D. in 1991 in American History from the University of Florida, M.A. in 1985 from the University of Florida, M.Ed. from the University of Florida in Special Education in 1976, and B.A. in 1974 from the College of William and Mary. He joined the University of Florida Department of History in 1992. His other works are Mental Retardation in America: A Historical Reader, and Ditch of Dreams: The Cross-Florida Barge Canal and the Struggle for Florida’s Future, written in collaboration with Santa Fe College Professor David Tegeder.
