Description: This activity introduces children to Timucuan culture, focusing on ways that local prehistoric people used fire to meet their daily needs. A hands-on experiment provides a bang as students use balloons (and water balloons!) to explore how prehistoric people could cook prior to the advent of pottery.”

Archaeology Works: How Old Is It? @ Archer Branch Library

Description: Archaeologists find lots of clues to the past, but how do they figure out how old all those dusty artifacts are? From looking at how artifact styles change through time to running high tech tests on them to get a better date, archaeologists have many different dating techniques at their disposal. In this presentation you’ll get to learn about a few of these different dating methods, then discover how they can help us learn about the people who have lived in Florida throughout time!

Civil War Symposium at the Matheson Museum

Description: Join us on Wednesday, August 13, 2014, at 6 p.m. for the Matheson Museum’s annual Civil War Symposium. Dr. Paul Ortiz of the Samuel Proctor Oral History Project, Professor of nineteenth century U.S. history at the University of Florida Dr. Matt Gallman, and University of Florida Professor Dr. Patricia Hilliard-Nunn will each lecture on the long-lasting impact of the Civil War in American history. Time for questions and discussion will be included in the program. Light refreshments will be provided. A donation of $5 per person is suggested.
