Treasures of the Prague-Zličín Cemetery: Pan-European Trade Goods in

Description: Recent excavations of a large burial ground in Prague-Zličín, Czech Republic (carried out by Museum of the City of Prague and non-profit laboratory Labrys, o.p.s.), have expanded our understanding of cultural interactions in 5th century Europe. Grave goods imported to Bohemia from far western Europe, including Visigothic Aquitaine and Spain, from the Baltic regions, Italy, and northern Africa, and Ukraine to the east demonstrate not only complex trading relations but also a level of cultural fusion as well as migration of certain groups during this early post-Roman period. In spite of past looting, among the recovered objects are elaborate precious metal jewelry as well as fine glass vessels and ceramics. The lecture was prepared by Jaroslav Jiřík, Ph.D. and Jiří Vávra, M.A., the leaders of the of Prague-Zličín burial ground project.
