The Crystal River Site in Citrus County, Florida

Description: Florida has a rich and diverse prehistoric archaeological heritage. Native peoples have lived here for more than 12,000 years. The state contains over 35,000 known sites that document many aspects of the native peoples’ way of life. Some remains are fingernail-sized chips of stone from a spear point and others include extensive mounds of shell, broken artifacts and living debris. The Crystal River site, a National Historic Landmark, is Citrus County’s most famous archaeological resource. Preservation of this and other sites is key to protecting Florida’s rich archaeological heritage.rnrnPolk State College Archaeology Club lecture on Saturday, June 9, 2012. The meeting will be held at 10:00 AM in Room 215 in the Learning Resources Building on the Winter Haven Campus (WLR 215). The lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission.
